Do you know just how diverse the world of whiskey is? When you’re looking for the best drink in Salmon Arm, you may not always be aware that there’s quite a bit of variety available when it comes to choosing whiskey. As a classic liquor, whiskey brings plenty of smooth, bold, and malty flavour to the party, with each different kind having a slightly different profile to enjoy.
Below, we’ll take a closer look at some of the ins and outs of the most popular types of whiskey you’ll find here in Salmon Arm!
SINGLE MALT
Single Malt is a relatively well-known option typically associated with major producers like Scotland, Ireland, Canada, and Japan, Each region has a unique signature to their taste, with Scottish whiskey being known for smokiness and maltiness, and smooth and surprisingly sharp out of Japan.
GRAIN WHISKY
Grain whisky uses, as the name suggests, grain instead of barley for distilling. Common options are maize/corn, wheat, or rye. Grain whiskies tend to have a bit of a harsher, more aggressive flavour profile compared to their single cousins, and to reduce the bite of a rye whiskey, they are often mixed with a single malt or in a pot still for a more balanced and smooth result.
BLENDED WHISKY
Blended whiskies, like those mentioned above, combine Single Malt Whiskies and Single Grain whisky. Blended whisky is at the head of the pack for sales with a total share of about 90% of all purchases made. Blended whiskies are great for cocktails and often are more affordable for regular sipping vs special occasions.
KENTUCKY BOURBON
Bourbon is an American-style whiskey made from malted grains with a minimum of 51% corn content. Bourbon can be produced anywhere in the U.S., but it has to be from Kentucky in order for the name “Bourbon” to appear on the label. To be considered straight Kentucky Bourbon it must be aged for at least 2 years, and cannot contain any flavouring or additives. Bourbon is lighter, sweeter, and often more fruity/creamier compared to straight whiskey.
TENNESSEE WHISKEY
Tennessee Whiskey is very similar to bourbon but differs in the post-distillation process. The charcoal used to make Jack Daniels offers a smooth, mellow flavour that contains notes of caramel, oak, and vanilla in the finished product.
WHISKY LIQUEUR
Whisky liqueurs are flavoured whiskies that have been combined with a sugar-based syrup for a much sweeter result. Two main categories under this umbrella are Creams like Baileys or Kahlúa, and non-cream liqueur.
